On Saturday 12th March, 18 Powys ESOL learners and their 13 children, were accompanied by Barbara Longshadow (ESOL Tutor) and Cecilia Forsythe (Curriculum Development Co-Ordinator for Powys) on a trip to our Port Talbot Learning Hub, where they were welcomed by Jason Passmore (Carpentry Tutor) and Derek Edwards (‘Carpentry for All’ Branch Tutor) as part of our ongoing collaboration between Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales and our valued Branches within the SW&Mid Region.
After an early 7am start from Welshpool, the group arrived at Port Talbot and had a Guided Tour of the Carpentry facilities, a presentation on ‘5 Women Rocking the Woodworking World’ in celebration of the Organisation’s commitment to ‘International Women’s Day’ and embarked on a discussion about wood carving, tools and the skills required to become a Carpenter and Wood Carver.
In the afternoon, the group travelled from the Hub to Swansea, where they spent the whole afternoon enjoying the hospitality of staff (Curators and Facilitators) at the Swansea National Waterfront Museum, one of Museums Wales’ sites. Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales has recently entered into a Partnership with the Museum, with the Organisation providing a range of courses for its staff and volunteers to attend. The Museum was delighted to welcome the group, and provided 3 Workshops throughout the afternoon for the learners to enjoy:
‘Beeswax Paper Experience’ – facilitated by the Museum Facilitators and Curators.
‘Pyrography Experience’ – facilitated by Jason Passmore and Derek Edwards.
And the ‘Old Objects Experience’ – facilitated by Museum Facilitators and Curators.
To end the day off in style, all learners enjoyed the ‘Vintage Fair’ in the garden of the Museum.
The group arrived back in Welshpool at 8.30pm and expressed that they are all eager to return to South Wales, to see more of the area and to re-visit the Hub and Museum.
Our most grateful thanks are extended to the Museum, for providing a complimentary lunch and refreshments for all staff and learners.
